Large Gardenia, Floral Oil Painting

by Allan Mosier
(Arlington TN)

Gardenia Flower, Floral Oil Painting

Gardenia Flower, Floral Oil Painting

My daughter took a photo of a gardenia flower on our back porch while I was painting a commission piece for someone else. When I delivered the painting my customer also wanted a floral picture and I told them about the picture my daughter had taken of the gardenia. They liked the photo so I was commissioned to paint a large 40x36 painting. This was done in oil on canvas and took about a week to complete. This was my first ever floral painting and have since painted a sunflower. They are so beautiful and a challenge to paint.

Editors note:

Wow! You have captured the glossy leaves so well! The delicate petals are convincing. A great job with this painting. Thanks for sharing.
It would be great to understand the technique used in its creation. How was it accomplished?

Painting the leaves
by: Anonymous

I tried to stay true to the dark values of the background and render the leaves using a dark green using red to neutralize. The dark color made the highlights on the leaves work. Bright yellows and white and blue in the reflected areas of the leaves.
