My Passion for Painting

by Lynda
(Idaho)

It does takes a love of learning, a childlike wonderment, persistence, good work habits, and passion to be an artist.

I am reading this information while on a break at my "day job" at an engineering firm. When I read these comments about what it takes to be an artist, I felt so much excitement well up in me about my passion for painting, that I couldn't just sit. I had to do something! So I decided to post a comment!

In my younger years I painted a little. Just dabbled in it, trying different mediums: water, acrylic, oil, pencil, pastel, etc. I enjoyed doing that. But, I didn't see the possibility of earning my keep doing paintings. So I set it aside for a time. I and my husband raised 6 children, and then when my husband retired, I went to work as an office manager to bring in some $$$.

A few weeks ago, I realized that I wanted to start up painting, again. I had some supplies and did an iris in acrylics. It didn't turn out the way I had thought it would. My husband said, it needed a little help. I agreed.

I set out to learn all I could about the art and skill of putting my vision down on canvas. I searched books, stores, art exhibits, the internet, and I came upon this website and was thrilled with the detail information, experience and work you have put into it!

I tried a painting with the method you have so aptly described and was pleased with the outcome - I was so excited that it turned out just as I had envisioned it!! (would submit it for your review, but I cannot figure out how to get a good photo of it.)

Yes, it takes love of learning, a childlike wonderment, persistence, good work habits, and passion to be a Real Artist.

STILL BUSY
by: Anonymous

I CAN UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO DO SOMETHING OF YOURSELF WITH YOUR LIFE. WE SPEND OUR LIFE DOING FOR FAMILY, JOB, AND OTHERS, AND ENJOY DOING IT. WE DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE A DEEP NEED WITHIN OURSELVES TO BE OURSELVES AT THE SAME TIME, BUT KEEP PUSHING THAT BACK IN OUR LIVES AND AND JUST WAITING. THIS WAIT ENDED FOR ME A FEW YEARS AGO. I HAD A SERIOUS WRECK AND WAS UNABLE TO KEEP WORKING IN MY CAREER. I WAS LOST. ALL THE REASONS I HAD FOR MY DAILY LIFE WERE DIFFERENT. I WAS UNABLE TO LIVE AS I HAD BEEN LIVING. I HAD TO BRING ABOUT A SERIOUS CHANGE IN MY LIFE IF I WAS GOING TO KEEP FROM GOING BONKERS. I FOUND A LOVE THAT WAS THERE IN MY LIFE ALL ALONG, PAINTING. I AM NOT AS GOOD AS SO MANY OF YOU OUT THERE, BUT I AM LEARNING. MY OIL PAINING HAS PUT PURPOSE IN MY LIFE I HAD THOUGHT I HAD LOST. I AM NOT A PERSON TO BE DOWN IN SPIRIT, I AM USUALLY A HAPPY PERSON, BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING PULLING ON ME AND IT TOOK A WHILE AND A WRECK TO HELP ME FIND IT. I HOPE THIS ENCOURAGES YOU AND OTHERS TO KEEP TRYING AND NOT GIVE UP ON SOMETHING SO SPECIAL.

Passion for painting
by: Delmus

Thank you so much Lynda for posting! It really does a heart good to hear that I'm reaching folks. I guess you can say it puts "gas in my tank" to keep up with this labor of love. I am like you in that while working for a living, I would day dream about what I would paint on my lunch breaks. Then at night, after homework help with the kids, and bed time stories, instead of watching "the bachelor" or "american idol" I would hit the make shift studio in my basement and knock out 12 to 15 paintings per year. I was lucky. A local gallery typically sold them all, so it definitely kept me in paint, canvas and fresh brushes as the years went by. Now, after homework help with the kids, they are too old for bedtime stories (teens), I hit the computer and write a bit about my painting experiences.
Keep on keeping on with the painting. It never gets old!

Delmus
