The Lost Lamb

by Peggy
(Coos Bay Oregon)

Sheppard guarding the lost lamb

Sheppard guarding the lost lamb

My grand mother has a print of this painting , and when I stayed at her house I loved looking at it, Her youngest son had a little lamb and a collie dog when he was 3 years old, I saw many pictures of him holding his lamb and the dog sitting next to them. The picture is a bit sad and these words came to me after I finished the painting

the lonely howl fills the cold stormy night
the watcher cries out over its little lambs plight
lost and alone, the lamb cares no more
another shepherd is standing ready at heavens door

this little lamb so pure and sweet
soon will be warm and rest at the masters feet
sometimes in life it just doesn't seem fair
when things are too tough, heavens door is always there

there is light and warmth, love lives there too
and a tiny lost lamb snuggles up to you
so don't cry, rejoice, be happy, feel free
we’ll all be together, the shepherd, the lost lamb and me

My Lost Lamb Picture Found NEW
by: Rhea

I remember also of this picture hanging up in my grandmother's house. I loved looking at that picture for hours for as far back as I can remember. Right before my grandmother died, she asked if I would like that picture. Of course I did. I was going thru an ugly divorce and went to go get my things and my ex had sold it, which I found out later it was for drugs. I cried often because I didn't think I would ever find this picture again, and how many memories it brought back of my childhood. I was totally heart broken. Several years later, I had told my current husband about this picture and how much it meant to me. We were going thru an antique store and hanging up on the wall was the exact same picture. My husband said we didn't have enough to buy it at that time and once again I was totally heartbroken. Little did I know, my husband asked them to hold it for him and he went back and bought it and had it put into a beautiful frame that would keep it from being damaged. I guess he paid more for the frame than he did for the picture because he knew how much it meant to me. Now I can hand it down to my kids and hopefully they will hand it down for generation to generation. My grandson who is 5 now, has always looked at that picture the same way I did. I tell him the story that I was told about the lost sheep and he asks me to tell him that story every time he comes over. Which I never say no. :) I am so glad I got the picture back in my family, it may not be the exact same one, but for what my husband did, it has just as much meaning as before.
Thank you for letting me share!

The Lost Lamb
by: Nanrym

The picture of the collie and the lamb were featured on a calendar kept by my grandmother, born in 1867, died 1945. She loved the picture, apparently related it to the parable from the Bible of the lost sheep/lamb. Our vet has an enlarged copy of the print on the wall in his clinic, he calls it "Found". I have been told that the original was done by a Scots artist but I have not yet been able to verify that.

Finally found it!
by: Anonymous

I finally found the picture! I had a print of this years ago, I think it was on a greeting card or something. Anyway, I loved to look at it and study it and wonder what it was supposed to represent. The ewe was lying a little way in the distance with birds overhead(buzzrds or eagle?). In my mind, the dog was calling for help so the orphaned lamb wouldn't perish. I imagined the print to be a depiction of God's mercy - the sheepdog representing a guardian angel. I lost my copy in a house fire and have wanted so much to replace it.
