Hi Delmus This painting has been done now for about 7 years and i used a book cover as reference material,as I am a great admirer of Caravaggio the strong contrasts in the picture inspired me to have a go, first I completed a detailed under painting in burnt umber only, then over worked with tones of gray to complete the grisaille underpainting leaving some of the umber to show through in the shadow areas, once this was completely dry I then glazed with ochres, vermilion and some white in to the highlight areas for opacity, I then left it to dry again before grazing over the shadow areas and background again to give some form of unity, thanks Brian
Editors note:
Thanks for submitting Brian. I can only show 2 of the 4 examples you sent, and the celebrity paintings were very, very good. But because of copyright issues, without a release, I can't show them. I hope you don't mind. These are still excellent examples of the flemish technique, and you are well on your way to success!
best wishes, Delmus
