Twin Falls

This painting was inspired by a Thomas Moran painting done back in the 1800's. I made major changes in the painting adding a second falls, more water over the rocks and rapid moving water in the pond, actually a small river coming from the falls.
I started with the background and fogged it in after painting the detail lightly, then came forward with the cliff in the center and the filling in of the falls. I felt that with that much water coming from the falls, there had to be more water moving in the picture, soooo I created it in my head and put it on the canvas. Had a lot of fun with this painting and worked on it on and off along with the lady in red, finished both paintings just last week. Since the falls did not have much color in them I wanted more blue in the water flowing over the rocks and coming closer to the viewer.

The trees were painted with sap green darkened where needed with ultramarine blue and burnt Umber, the blues uses were ultramarine blue mixed with cerulean blue and white. umbers, orchres and naples yellow were uses in the cliffs, and grayed down some with raw umber, blue and white mix. The foggy and distant areas were dry brushed with very little paint. The paint was thinned down with a little liquin like warm butter, everything was softened brushing lightly with a mop brush.
